To pick out the best boards for your project, you need to know your woods, you need to know your saw mill cuts, you need to know your finishes and, you need to answer the following 6 questions...

1.) Is the boards straight or does the boards have a bow in it?

2.) Does the number have a lot of knots in it.

3.) Does the boards have any splits in it?

4.) Does the boards have any knots in-peciifcally speaking in the middle?

NOTE:
A knot in the middle of the boards will make the weakest point of the boards even weaker.

5.) Does the boards have a crown?

6.) Is the boards cupped?




Cuts:
...What are the different cuts of boards?
There are 3 different cuts of boards.

1.) Plain Sawn

2.) Quarter Sawn

3.) Rift Sawn


...What is plain sawn boards?
Plain sawn boards is where the annual rings are 30 degrees or less to the face of the board.

...What is quarter sawn boards?
Quarter sawn boards is where the annual rings are 60-90 degrees to the face of the board.

...What is rift sawn boards?
Rift sawn boards is where the annual rings are 30-60 degrees to the face of the board.

Rough sawn or rough cut boards is a plain cut of boards that has not yet been plained, kiln dried or chemically treated.



Stacking:
...What is the proper way to stack boards?
The proper way to stack boards is as follows:

Stack the boards with its narrow side down.

For example, let's say you are stacking 2x10s. You would not stack the 2x10s on the 9.5" side face down. You would stack the 2x10s on the 1.5" side face down.

NOTE: If the boards is stored outside, be sure you elevate it and cover the boards with a tarp.




Storing:

...Why should I not store boards outside, even if the boards is elevated and covered, for an extended period of time?
boards is porous. If boards is left outside for an extended period of time-even if elevated and covered, boards will absorb moisture and warp.
